TWINROCKER CUSTOM HANDMADE PAPERS

Contact:

When a special project needs a unique paper, one that is designed especially for it, we enjoy the opportunity to use our twenty five years of experience to create that paper. We confer closely with our clients to get a feeling for the entire project, giving attention to all the necessary specifications of size, thickness, surface, color and watermarks. Frequently, a color can be chosen from the large variety of colors we have made in the past. However, we are willing to experiment until we succeed in creating a paper that is right for the project in all respects. Minimum Order and Custom Order Set-Up Fee:

How to Order a Custom Paper & the Costs Involved

Minimum Order and Custom Order Set-Up Fee:

The Set-up fee relates to the pulp necessarily lost in order to charge the vat used to make the paper, the time required to wash the felts at the end of the making, etc. Because it relates to the setting up of the vat, custom paper can be ordered in more than one size with no additional set-up fee. A sheet size of 23" x 32" (59 cm x 81 cm) has a set-up fee of $150. A sheet size larger than that has a set-up fee of $250.

With Custom paper, there is a minimum order of $500 worth of paper. This can include more than one size or shape.

How To Order A Custom Paper

There are three basic ways to order a Custom Paper:

1. You can select a color from the papers we have made in the past. Then define the other specifications of: size, shape, thickness, surface (rough coldpress, or hotpressed), softness or hardness, laid or wove mould surface, size of the deckle (normal or exaggerated "Feather" deckle), possible custom watermark, possible inclusions of randomly floating plant fibers, flecks, flower petals, etc., and possible imagery in colored pulp. Custom paper can be ordered in any size from 3.5" x 4.5" (8.9 cm x 11.5 cm) up to 34" x 48" (86 cm x 122 cm), in any thickness from .004" (.10 mm)--.035" (.89 mm). To get an estimate of the sheet price, see the generic price lists. Kathryn Clark will determine the final price depending on the quantity and the rest of the specifi cations.

2. You can request a new color by sending a swatch of another paper, cloth, printed color, drawn or painted swatch, along with the other specifications mentioned above. We can then create a handmade paper sample that is as close to the requested color as possible and send it to you for approval. This can be a small sample (from which we cannot create a real color formula but can just get an approximation) or it can be a "Trial Run" (which is the smallest making of actual paper from one beater load of pu lp in which we can create a real color formula). The time to do this is charged at $50 per hour, and we can give you an estimate of the amount of time required before we begin.

Making Sample Sheets or a Trial Run:

If the client needs to see possible color samples or actual colored sheets of paper in the final size or smaller for approval before placing an order for the Custom making, we can do that in two different ways.

1. We can make small colored sheets of paper 3" (8 cm) in diameter from the actual pigments that we would later use to create a real color formula. This is a fast and inexpensive way to create an approximate color when the client wants to see several dif ferent possible paper colors. However, with this method, we do not use enough pulp to create a useable color formula.

2. In a "Trial Run", we can make actual sheets of paper in the required size and thickness from the smallest amount of pulp necessary to create a real color formula. Such time is charged at $50 per hour, and most "Trial Runs" take from ½ to 1 full workin g day. F2. Making Sample Sheets or a Trial Run:

Custom Watermarks:

You may want to have your personal watermark in your paper along with the Twinrocker mark. You can decide where both will be placed by sending a pattern of the sheet with the location of each indicated.

The design should be given to us in the actual size you wish to see it in the paper. It should be in black and white, either camera-ready for a photographically reproduced watermark or a drawn design which we can form by hand from brass wire. Although i t is necessary to see the design to provide a price quote, most normal press marks, logos, or single names cost $100. There is only a one-time fee to have the mark made. It remains at Twinrocker and can be used in future paper orders.

When a paper has a custom watermark, the client is required to purchase the entire making of both "firsts" and "seconds" (which are priced at 30% off the retail price) since the paper has been personalized and cannot be sold to anyone else. However, the client is not required to purchase more than 10% of the numbered of sheets ordered.

Artistic Imagery in Laminations of Colored Pulps:

Twinrocker can produce editions of artistic images in colored pulps. The images can either be created by Kathryn Clark herself or by another artist working collaboratively with Twinrocker. As is common with limited edition prints, proofing is charged at $50 per hour. After the "master" image has been created, Twinrocker provides a firm price quote for the production of the edition.

Unlike limited edition prints, editions of handmade paper are made completely by hand, with the intention of duplicating the "master image", but of course no two examples are exactly alike. This necessary consequence of the process gives a special vitalit y and "original" quality to editions in handmade paper. Founded in 1971, Twinrocker was the first handmade paper studio of its kind in the US. We developed many of the artistic techniques used today and can draw on our 25 years of experience to invent n ew techniques and images for you.

Quantity Discounts and Terms of Payment:

For especially large orders, a quantity discount may be possible depending on the difficulty of the order. Kathryn Clark will offer a price quote. Call her at 800-757-8946.

A deposit of at least 1/3 the total is required, then 1/3 mid-making, then the final 1/3 before delivery. Payment must be in US funds by check, credit card, or direct electronic bank deposit. International clients may either pay as described above or wi th a Letter of Credit.

Packing & Shipping:

Your paper will be shipped flat in cardboard boxes or custom crates. We normally ship UPS, although you may specify the method of delivery. Shipping charges are billed at the actual cost and all paper is insured for its full value during transit.
