Kathryn H. Clark: 'MAKING IT IN PAPER, An Indiana Mill' Kathryn Clark's personal notebook of the events of the difficult first fifteen years of twinrockerer, 1971-1986. Photos by Todd Matus. SB, 60 pp. BKCLARK (0.2 lb.)

AUNT SALLIE'S LAMENT
Margaret Kaufman / Claire Van Vliet: Margaret Kaufman is a poet and fiction writer who often uses quilts as metaphors for women's lives. Claire Van Vliet designed, printed and constructed the original limited edition book in 1988 based on a binding structure developed by Hedi Kyle. The original was made from a large variety of handmade papers, hand cut to fit together in a manner similar to a pieced quilt to support and illuminate Kaufman's poem within a poem. This smaller format (8' x 8') edition is on printed and die cut commercial paper but nevertheless remains true to the theme of the original. Claire Van Vliet established the Janus Press in 1955 to print books and broadsides with original art. In 1989, Claire Van Vliet received a MacArthur Fellowship in recognition of her original and innovative work in the book arts. SB in slipcase, $14.95
ST. FRANCIS PREACHES TO THE BIRDS
Peter Schumann: An outstanding example of the renaissance of the book arts in America, every book artist who knows a child should get one copy for themselves and one for the child! (At BSCHUMANN, it is easily affordable.) An 'enchanting rendition of a classic story', Saint Francis wakes up, opens the window, brushes his teeth (and says, 'Thank you, teeth!'), drinks his coffee (and says, 'Thank you, coffee!'), and sets out to preach to the birds. Color woodblock prints illuminate the simplicity and vitality of Saint Francis's rapport with the natural world. The original limited edition book was written by Peter Schumann of the Bread and Puppet Theatre and designed and printed by Claire Van Vliet at the Janus Press in 1978. Peter Schumann's Bread and Puppet Theatre has delighted audiences all over the world with huge papier-mache puppets and masked performers in original theatre based on ancient traditional themes. Claire Van Vliet established the Janus Press in 1955 to print books and broadsides with original art. In 1989, Claire Van Vliet received a MacArthur Fellowship in recognition of her original and innovative work in the book arts. The original large-format 100 copy edition has been reproduced several times in large edition, small-format form, but this Chronicle Press book is the best with colors true to the original. HB, BSCHUMANN
